In the Hakomi training, students learn to develop an exquisite sensitivity and attunement to others, and to convey this understanding. This empathy and responsiveness helps to create a deep sense of safety and connection, and facilitates the effectiveness of the therapy. The self-development of the therapist coupled with Hakomi’s highly innovative techniques, form the core of the training.
Using non-dualistic principles of mindfulness and gentle, open curiosity, the Hakomi therapist creates an atmosphere of safety for deep and sophisticated processing. This helps the client yield their defences safely and willingly to be examined, re-evaluated and transformed into more functional choices and behaviors.
The relief, increased self-awareness and freedom provides the client with a sense of personal empowerment, choice, and a richer appreciation for life.
The training is 16 blocks long (approximately 20 months) and each block builds on the previous block's curriculum and follows the Stages of the Hakomi Process.
Learning occurs through a combination of lecture, practice, witnessing one's own and each other's personal work aided and refined by the groups intelligence and wisdom.
Hakomi trainings focus on expanding the practitioner’s range of skills and abilities while also creating a safe container in which to explore and more fully understand ourselves as therapists healers and as individuals. Students are exposed to a few different faculty in order to see the varied but closely aligned style differences in approaching the method.
Who is this training for?

Curriculum of the training:
This particular curriculum is a work in progress. The Hakomi Institute and Faculty is still predominantly cis-gendered and white, with the exception of a few, but growing, BIPOC and LGBTQ members. We are working hard to develop clear, respectful and connected pathways through the devastating and demoralizing legacies of the field of psychotherapy. It's imperative to the Institute that we co-create the correct lexicon and curriculum that matches the real world and the huge variety of human being.

ADVANCED TRAINING:
For those who choose to achieve Certification in the Hakomi Method and join the global ranks of our Certified Hakomi Therapists; or for those who just want to continue deepening and perfecting their skills, we provide a 4-block advanced training offered by invitation. This smaller group meets approximately every three months (as the calendar allows) and offers the chance to both practice skills and work through any obstacles to perfecting the flow of the Hakomi session. Two different trainers share the weekends so that students are exposed to the different stylistic approaches to the method. It also gives the trainers a chance to give comprehensive feedback to each student
PAP Policy
A note to those currently practicing or interested in practicing psychedelic guide work and Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP): Because of widespread reports of harm within the psychedelic assisted psychotherapy (PAP) and underground medicine guide community, the Hakomi Calgary Training team has made a decision to not accept applicants who are not licensed in psychotherapy, counseling, or mental health and have indicated that they want to use Hakomi training to support their practice as psychedelic guides outside of the auspices of a legal body that will supervise and oversee their work. The Hakomi Institute does not currently offer training in psychedelic assisted therapy though a training is pending for 2024 -2025. Working with substances that increase suggestibility while decreasing boundaries and capacity to advocate for oneself increases the potential for harm, and our training team is not in a position to ethically and responsibly supervise Hakomi students engaged in such work. The Hakomi Institute has recently developed a policy regarding psychedelic assisted therapy and medicine guide work. You can find it here: https://hakomiinstitute.com/hakomi-psychedelic-assisted-psychotherapy
As things develop in the field of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy, we will continue to review this policy and make adjustments in alignment with safe, effective and legal practices. We know that this may come as a disappointment to some of you. We have given this matter much consideration and it has been a difficult decision for us to make. If you intend to practice legal psychedelic assisted psychotherapy— please provide information in your application regarding the legal body that will oversee your work.
